Central Alberta Roundabout Resources was created by The City of Red Deer in partnership with Alberta Transportation, The City of Lacombe, The Town of Blackfalds and Lacombe County with the goal to provide residents of Central Alberta the information and tools they need to use roundabouts. Roundabouts are relatively new for Central Alberta and this type of intersection is increasingly being built over traditional signalized intersections for safety and traffic capacity benefits.
A modern two-lane roundabout is now open at 67 Street and 30 Avenue in Red Deer. A roundabout was chosen for this location for safety and operational advantages, and to support future growth in the city's northeast.

A modern two-lane roundabout is being built to improve safety and traffic flow at 67 Street and Orr Drive/Johnstone Drive, one of Red Deer's busiest and highest collision intersections. A second single lane roundabout is being built at Orr Drive at 66 Street. Both roundabouts are expected to open in the fall of 2016.

In 2006, Alberta Transportation identified the need to twin Highway 2A, from Highway 11A (Red Deer) to Highway 597 (Blackfalds). This was the result of increased traffic volumes exceeding 10,000 average annual daily traffic.
As part of this twinning requirement, Alberta Transportation also required the upgrade of the intersection at Highway 2A and Highway 597. Alberta Transportation constructed a modern two-lane roundabout at the intersection of Highways 2A and 597, just to the south of the Town of Blackfalds.
Traffic began moving through the roundabout lanes in August 2015.
Lacombe
Lacombe's first single roundabout is located at the intersection of College Avenue/C&E Trail, is sized to accommodate large semi-trailers and, includes multi-use pathway connections for pedestrians and bicyclists. The City of Lacombe 2013 Transportation Master Plan recommended a roundabout be constructed at the intersection due to further growth.
Sylvan Lake
The roundabout at Highway 20 and Highway 11A was one of the first roundabouts constructed in Central Alberta by Alberta Transportation. Prior to its construction in 2008, it was common during the summer months to see traffic backed up at the 4 way stop for up to 5 km. The single lane roundabout eliminated these lengthy delays, while improving the safety of the intersection.
The intersection of Highway 13 and Highway 21 is a signalized intersection located west of the City of Camrose. A recent traffic safety assessment of the intersection indicated a number of collisions associated with turn movements and high speeds at the rural intersection. Maintaining the safety and function of this intersection is a priority for Alberta Transportation.
After various consultations with the public and other stakeholders, Alberta Transportation is replacing the current signalized intersection with a modern roundabout. Construction is expected to be complete in October 2015.
